Digna Love - Alternative Medicine From Around the World

Digna Love is currently studying alternative medicine at Everglades University in southern Florida, and hopes to become a holistic healer upon graduation. Throughout her studies, she has learned about many different holistic healing techniques that come from around the world. For thousands of years, cultures were separated from each other, and had their own separate healing and spiritual practices. However, now that the world has become a ‘global village’, it is easier than ever for anyone to learn about and benefit from the practices of any culture. Digna Love is originally from the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia, but she currently lives in the United States, and loves learning about the practices of many different cultures.

- Traditional Chinese medicine is often used by alternative or holistic doctors and healers in the United States and Europe when western techniques are ineffective. This system combines many different practices that have been developed over the course of thousands of years, and are still extremely common in Asia today. The most well-known of these practices in acupuncture, which uses needles to remove tension in the bodies’ pressure points. Other practices include the use of natural herbal products instead of chemical treatments, as well as the practice of tai chi, which is a physical exercise that calms the minds and balances the body.

- Less well known, but just as in-depth as the medical practices of many other cultures, is South American alternative medicine. There are many medicinal plants that are native to South America that were used by the ancient civilizations of the Aztec, Inca, and Maya, and still can be used today for healing and spiritual purposes. These are often combined with specific prayers or meditations to heal physical ailments or improve a suffering mental state. These traditions were passed down from ancestor to ancestor, and still remain alive today because of the families that continue to pass down their traditions.

- Another significant form of alternative medicine is the Ayurvedic practice, which is from India. One of the most important aspects of Ayurvedic medicine is its use of massage techniques, which improve circulation throughout the body, leaving the patient feeling more energized, yet relaxed. Ayurvedic medicine also focuses on applying oils and herbs to various points throughout the body to balance its’ energies and reduce tension.

- Unani medicine is a practice that began in ancient Greece and focuses on balancing the four humors of blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. In modern day, this system focuses on the presence of various elements in the body in addition to these humors, and aims to balance them.

These are just a few of the many types of alternative medicine that Digna Love has studied throughout her degree.
